The D-pad, the center select button, and the back button do the heavy lifting in almost every IPTV player app on a Firestick. The D-pad moves the highlight across channel tiles, category rows, or the on-screen keyboard when you type a server address or a username. Select opens whatever is highlighted, whether that's a channel, a movie, or a settings menu. Back backs out one screen at a time; it does not close the app, so if you're stuck, pressing back repeatedly gets you to the app's home screen rather than Fire TV's home screen. Play/pause and rewind only respond once video is actually on screen. Before that point, they usually do nothing, which is normal and not a sign anything is broken.

Player apps set button behavior per screen, not once for the whole app. A colored button that jumps straight to a movies row on the VOD screen can sit unassigned on the live TV screen of the same app, and that split is set inside the app's settings menu, not by Fire TV itself. If a shortcut you expected to work does nothing, check whether you're testing it on the screen it was actually built for before assuming your remote or the app is broken. This uneven mapping is common enough across player apps that it's worth treating as normal rather than a bug — the fix is checking the app's own remote or shortcuts settings page.

Most IPTV player apps bury button assignments inside a settings or preferences menu, often labeled remote control, shortcuts, or general settings. Open it with select, then use the D-pad to scroll through the list of assignable actions — home, search, favorites, EPG (the on-screen guide that shows what's airing now and next), and so on. Not every app lets you remap buttons; some only let you view what's already assigned. If you use more than one player app on the same Firestick, expect the assignments to differ between them, since each app manages its own settings independently of the others and independently of Fire TV's system settings.

The microphone button on a Firestick remote is built for Fire TV's own voice search, and most IPTV player apps don't hook into it directly, so pressing it while inside a player app usually just opens Fire TV's system-level voice search over the top of your player. Where it does help is faster typing: instead of using the D-pad to peck out a server address or username on the on-screen keyboard letter by letter, use voice search to open the app again, then switch to manual entry for anything that needs to be typed exactly, like a URL or login field.
