Mac Setup — VLC, Apple Silicon and Hardware Decoding
Support Lead
A Mac gets you watching in about three minutes: install VLC, paste the M3U link from your activation email, done. It is the fastest way to check a new line before you touch the television, and on an M-series Mac a 4K stream barely registers on the battery.
The detail that matters here is which build you install. VLC ships separate Intel and Apple Silicon downloads, and running the Intel one under Rosetta on an M-series Mac means missing the media engine that makes 4K effortless. Two clicks on the download page, a noticeable difference in fan noise.
Step by step
Watching on a Mac
On an M1, M2, M3 or M4 Mac, take the Apple Silicon download. It is a separate button on the same page.
- 1
Install VLC — the right build
From videolan.org, choose the Apple Silicon build on M-series Macs and the Intel build on older ones. The native build uses the hardware media engine instead of emulating.
Tip · Not sure which you have? Apple menu → About This Mac. A Chip line means Apple Silicon; a Processor line means Intel.
- 2
Open the M3U link
File → Open Network, or Cmd+N. Paste the M3U URL from your activation email and click Open. The full channel list appears in the playlist window.
Tip · Mail wraps long URLs. Paste into TextEdit first and confirm it is a single unbroken line before using it.

Or use IPTV Smarters Pro with Xtream Codes
Download IPTV Smarters Pro for Mac from iptvsmarters.com, or install IPTV Smarters Expert 4K from the Mac App Store. Either takes the server URL, username and password from your email and gives you the program guide plus the 219,577-title on-demand library.
Tip · The Mac App Store version installs without any security prompt. The one downloaded from iptvsmarters.com will trigger Gatekeeper — see the note below.
- 4
Set decoding to VideoToolbox
VLC → Settings → Input / Codecs → Hardware-accelerated decoding → VideoToolbox. This hands 4K HEVC to the dedicated decoder rather than the CPU.
Tip · On an M-series Mac this is the difference between a silent machine and a warm one. Leave it on Automatic if you are unsure.
- 5
Raise the network cache if needed
Settings → Show All → Input / Codecs → Network caching, set 3000 ms, then restart VLC. Useful on Wi-Fi, unnecessary on Ethernet.
Tip · A bigger cache costs a second or two when switching channels and buys a much steadier picture. Worth it on any wireless connection.
- 6
Know what your Mac can decode
M1 and later decode HEVC and H.264 in the media engine, so 4K sits near idle. Intel Macs from 2016 to 2020 handle 8-bit HEVC in hardware but fall back to software for 10-bit HDR.
Tip · If an older Intel MacBook runs hot on 4K but is fine on FHD, that is the 10-bit fallback rather than the stream. It is a hardware limit.
Most common snag
macOS refuses to open a player you downloaded
Gatekeeper blocks apps from outside the App Store with a message about an unidentified developer, and people assume the download is broken. Right-click the app and choose Open, which gives you an Open button the plain double-click does not, or go to System Settings → Privacy & Security and click Open Anyway. Do that only for software you fetched from the developer's own site — VLC from videolan.org, for example. If you cannot say exactly where a file came from, do not override the warning for it.
