Apple TV 4K Setup — tvOS Install and Correct 4K Output

Apple TV is the tidiest way to run ip4ktv on a television. The player comes from the tvOS App Store, there is no sideloading, no computer and no MAC bind — you sign in with the same three credentials you would use on a phone. Five minutes, including the typing.

The part that separates a good Apple TV picture from an ordinary one is a pair of settings Apple leaves off by default. Match Dynamic Range and Match Frame Rate cost nothing, take thirty seconds, and are the reason a 50fps broadcast either looks right or looks slightly wrong all evening.

Step by step

Installing on Apple TV

Works on Apple TV 4K and Apple TV HD. Only the 4K models output 2160p — the HD model tops out at 1080p.

  1. 1

Install IBO Player Pro or IPTV Smarters Expert 4K

Open the App Store on the Apple TV and search for IBO Player Pro (recommended) or IPTV Smarters Expert 4K. There is no sideloading on tvOS and none is needed.

Tip · Check whether the app is a universal purchase. Many are, so buying it once on your iPhone also unlocks the tvOS version at no extra cost.

  2. 2

Let your phone do the typing

When the player asks for credentials, a notification appears on your iPhone offering to type for you. Accept it — the Siri Remote keyboard is miserable for long URLs.

Tip · No notification? Open Control Center on the iPhone and use the Apple TV Remote, which has the same keyboard.

  3. 3

    Sign in with Xtream Codes

Enter the server URL, username and password from your activation email. Choose the Xtream Codes option rather than M3U so the guide and on-demand library come across.

Tip · Paste from the email on the phone rather than reading it aloud. Long server URLs are where mistakes happen.

  4. 4

Set the video format to 4K

Settings → Video and Audio → Format, and choose 4K SDR, or 4K Dolby Vision if your TV supports it. The default is often lower than the set can handle.

Tip · If the screen blanks and reverts, the HDMI cable or port cannot carry that mode. Try a different port — usually only some are full-bandwidth.

  5. 5

Turn on Match Content — both switches

Settings → Video and Audio → Match Content, then enable Match Dynamic Range and Match Frame Rate. Both are off out of the box.

Tip · Match Frame Rate is the one that fixes judder on 25 and 50fps European broadcasts. If motion has always looked faintly wrong, this is why.

  6. 6

Wire it in if your model has a port

The 128 GB Apple TV 4K has Ethernet; the 64 GB Wi-Fi model does not. Wired removes the most common cause of 4K dropouts.

Tip · On the Wi-Fi model, use 5 GHz and keep the Apple TV in line of sight of the router. A 4K stream wants around 25 Mbps held steady.

Most common snag

Motion looks slightly wrong on live sport

Apple TV outputs at a fixed refresh rate unless you tell it otherwise, so a 50fps broadcast gets converted to 60Hz and every fifth frame is duplicated. It is not dropouts and it is not the stream — it is a steady, low-level stutter on panning shots that people describe as the picture looking cheap. Settings → Video and Audio → Match Content → Match Frame Rate, switch it on, and it disappears. Expect a brief black screen each time a channel changes rate; that is the TV resyncing, and it is the trade.

Device questions

What people ask about this one

Which Apple TV models handle 4K?
Every Apple TV 4K, from the 2017 model onwards, decodes HEVC 2160p. The Apple TV HD, the 4th-generation model from 2015, is capped at 1080p regardless of the source. It still works well and channels look good, but a 4K feed reaches the screen as HD.
Do I need a Mac or a computer to set it up?
No. Everything happens on the Apple TV itself, with an iPhone optionally doing the typing. There is no sideloading, no cable, no profile to install and nothing to configure on a computer first.
I bought the player on my iPhone. Do I pay again on Apple TV?
Usually not. Many IPTV players are universal purchases, which means one purchase covers iPhone, iPad and Apple TV under the same Apple Account. The App Store listing says whether an app qualifies. Either way, that payment is to the app developer and never to us.
Do I get 5.1 or Dolby Atmos audio?
Where the broadcaster supplies it and the player passes it through, yes. Plenty of channels are stereo at source, and no amount of configuration changes that. Set Settings → Video and Audio → Audio Format to Auto so the Apple TV takes whatever the stream actually carries rather than downmixing everything.

Most Apple TV picture complaints are a format or Match Content setting rather than the stream. Photograph that screen and send it to 212704548494 on WhatsApp or [email protected] and we will tell you exactly what to change.
