The current sticks differ in ways that matter for live TV. The Lite tops out at 1080p on Wi-Fi 5 with 1 GB of RAM, which suits a short favorites list and little else. The 4K adds HDR output, 1.5 GB of RAM and Wi-Fi 6 on the 2023 revision. The 4K Max carries 2 GB of RAM, Wi-Fi 6E and, on the 2023 unit, 16 GB of flash instead of 8 GB. RAM is the spec that decides whether a long channel list scrolls or stalls, so if you plan to browse a 54,000-channel catalog rather than fifteen pinned favorites, buy for RAM first and resolution second.

Why does the stick stutter when your speed test looks fine?
A speed test measures one large download. A live channel arrives as a chain of roughly six-second segments, so the question is not peak throughput but whether the next segment lands before the buffer empties. Miss it and you see a visible freeze even on a 300 Mbps line. Three things break that chain on a stick: Wi-Fi that drops to 2.4 GHz behind a TV panel, a player rebuilding a huge channel list in memory, and a stalled session at the server end. The last one is not yours to fix, which is why any service should publish an uptime figure. Ours is 99.99%, about 53 minutes of downtime a year.

How much of the 8 GB can you actually use?
Fire OS and its preinstalled apps take roughly half the 8 GB, leaving about 4 GB for everything you add. A player app is small, but its cache is not: guide data for a large lineup, channel logos and catch-up thumbnails can occupy several hundred megabytes within a week. When free space drops under about 500 MB, Fire OS starts evicting apps in the background and playback gets choppy in a way that looks exactly like a network fault. Clear the player cache monthly, uninstall the apps you never open, and keep one player rather than three. The 4K Max 2023 unit doubles the flash, which is the practical reason to prefer it.

What does the player app change about performance?
More than the stick does. Player apps hold the visible channel list in RAM, and they get unstable somewhere above roughly 18,000 visible channels on 2 GB hardware. Hiding the country and category groups you never watch is therefore a real performance fix, not housekeeping. Two settings help consistently: set the buffer to none so the player stops waiting to fill a cache it will discard on the next channel change, and point the stick at a public DNS resolver so hostname lookups do not add a second to every tune-in. Hardware decoding should be on; software decoding pushes 4K HEVC onto four Cortex-A55 cores that cannot keep up.

Settings, My Fire TV, About shows the exact device name. Lite, 4K and 4K Max behave differently under a large channel list, and the difference is RAM rather than resolution.
