Because Amazon moved it. Older instructions send you to a Developer options entry that simply is not present on current Fire OS builds, and readers reasonably conclude their device is broken. The current path is Settings, then My Fire TV, then About, where you highlight the device name itself and press select seven times until an on-screen counter appears. Developer options then becomes visible one level back. Two details trip people up: the row must be the device name, not the word About above it, and the presses need to be deliberate rather than rapid. If no counter shows after seven, you are on the wrong row.

The per-app permission. Fire OS no longer uses one global unknown-sources switch; it grants install rights to individual apps. Enabling Developer options only exposes the list. You still have to turn the switch on for the specific download utility you are using, by name. This is why an install can fail silently for someone who followed every step of an older guide correctly. If you later use a browser or a file manager to fetch an update, expect a fresh prompt for that app too, because the permission does not carry across. Grant it, then retry the install without re-downloading.

By where it stops. A download that never starts, or dies at a few percent, points at the address or the network. A download that completes and then fails during installation is nearly always space. An 8 GB Firestick often ships with well under a gigabyte usable once system files and preinstalled apps are counted, and the installer needs room for both the package and the unpacked app at the same time. Check Settings, My Fire TV, About, Storage before blaming the file. Delete old installer packages first, since those are the most common dead weight on a Fire TV device.

Change the input method rather than the address. Most failed fetches are typing errors made on an on-screen keyboard, and a single wrong character produces a generic error with no clue. Pair the Fire TV remote app on your phone and type the address there, or connect a USB keyboard through a powered hub. If the address is definitely correct and still fails, try it over a phone hotspot to rule out a network-level block, then retry on your home connection. Some networks filter direct downloads, and that shows up as a failure that looks exactly like a wrong link.
