What Is IPTV and How Does It Work? No Dish, No Coax

IPTV is internet protocol television: TV delivered as data over an IP network instead of over coax, a fiber TV plant or a satellite dish. The term describes a delivery method. It is not a company and not a legal status. Three shapes of content ride on it. Live channels stream continuously. Video on demand sits on a server until you press play. Catch-up and time-shifted content is recorded live output you start later. A service can offer one, two or all three; ours carries 54,000+ live channels and 219,577+ VOD titles across 190+ countries. Because the method is generic, quality between services varies far more than the shared label suggests.

You get a line: either a playlist link, usually an M3U file, or a portal login with a username and password. You install a player such as IPTV Smarters, TiviMate, Kodi, VLC or a built-in smart TV app, then enter that line once. The app pulls the channel list plus an EPG, and requests a stream for whatever you select.
