It depends entirely on the operating system behind the screen. Sets built on Android TV or Fire TV install the same players as a stick, so nothing extra is needed. Why does a cheap stick often beat the television's own app?
Three reasons, none of them about picture. Television firmware allocates apps modest memory, and a player holds the entire visible channel list in RAM, so a large catalog feels slow on a set and quick on a box. Television platforms update slowly and drop older apps from their stores, so software that works now may vanish in a few years. And a stick carries a current decoder, which matters for high-bitrate 4K in the 15 to 25 Mbps range. How many screens does a household actually need?

Confirm HEVC decoding, since HEVC carries the same picture at roughly half the bitrate of H.264 and most services lean on it.
