Why does a cheap stick often beat the television's own app?

Three reasons, none of them about picture. Television firmware allocates apps modest memory, and a player holds the entire visible channel list in RAM, so a large catalog feels slow on a set and quick on a box. Television platforms update slowly and drop older apps from their stores, so software that works now may vanish in a few years. What should you check on the television before subscribing?

Four things, all findable in ten minutes. Confirm the platform and that a player is available in its store. Confirm HEVC decoding, since HEVC carries the same picture at roughly half the bitrate of H.264 and most services lean on it. Confirm the network path, preferring ethernet or 5 GHz Wi-Fi over a shared 2.4 GHz band. And confirm free storage, because a player plus its guide cache needs room to work. Then trim the channel list once it loads: hiding unused groups keeps the visible count well below the roughly 18,000 mark where players start to misbehave.

Hide unused channel groups and reopen the app; the guide typically fills in on the next load.

That scope points at the source, not your television. A single failing channel is a problem with that stream, and no setting on your end applies. If a whole category fails instead, the fault is server-side. If everything fails, look at the line, the player or an expired session. Before changing anything, switch to another channel and come straight back: recovery on return means the session stalled, so bandwidth was never the cause and further network tuning will not help.
