What actually counts as an IPTV receiver?
There's no single device called an IPTV receiver. It's any screen or box running a player app: a Firestick, an Android TV box, an NVIDIA Shield, a smart TV with a built-in app on LG, or a set-top unit like TVIP, MAG, BuzzTV or Formuler. TiVo Stream 4K and ONN devices work the same way — they don't carry channels themselves, they decode a stream your subscription sends them. The device matters because decoding, not the subscription, is where 4K either holds up or falls apart, so two people on the same plan can see very different picture quality on different hardware.
Does the receiver need to support HEVC?
Yes, for practical 4K it does. HEVC (H.265) is the compression format that gets a 4K picture down to about half the bitrate that older H.264 encoding needs for the same quality. A device without hardware HEVC decoding either can't play a 4K HEVC stream at all or has to decode it in software, which drops frames and heats up the box on longer streams. Most current Android TV boxes, Apple TV, newer Firestick models and NVIDIA Shield handle HEVC decode in hardware; older or budget boxes sometimes don't, and there's usually no clear label telling you which category yours falls into.
How much bandwidth does a 4K stream actually need?
Plan for 15-25 Mbps sustained, not peak, and about 7 GB per hour of data. A live stream arrives in short segments, roughly 6 seconds each, so if your connection dips below that range for longer than the buffer holds, the picture freezes rather than just going soft. This is why a household running one 4K stream plus other traffic on the same router can see stalls that a speed test alone won't explain — the test measures peak throughput at one moment, not what's left over for your stream during a dip later in the evening.
Why do some receivers slow down on large channel lists?
Player apps hold the entire channel list in memory, and performance degrades once a list runs past roughly 18,000 visible channels, since the app has to search and render more entries on every scroll and channel change. Lower-memory boxes feel this first: slow list loading, delayed channel switches, occasional crashes on launch. Hiding unused channel groups in the app's settings cuts what stays in memory and is a real fix, not a workaround, because it reduces what the device actually has to hold in memory rather than masking a deeper problem underneath.
