Which Fire TV devices still allow this?

Anything running Fire OS does. The check takes ten seconds: Settings, My Fire TV, About, and read the operating system line. Fire OS sticks expose Developer Options and a per-app Install Unknown Apps switch, which is all Downloader needs. Vega OS is a different system entirely and has no sideloading path at all, so no code, no file manager and no command-line trick installs a player on one. The two models shipped so far are the Fire TV Stick 4K Select from October 2025 and the Fire TV Stick HD from April 2026. Older 4K and 4K Max sticks are unaffected and behave the way every guide describes.

What do you do on a Vega OS stick instead?

You have two honest options. Use whatever players the device's own store carries and accept the shorter list, or stream from a second device such as an older Fire TV Stick, an Android TV box, a games console browser or a laptop connected by HDMI. Neither is a workaround for the block, because there is no workaround. This is worth knowing before purchase rather than after: if a household streams through sideloaded players, a Vega device is the wrong buy at any price. A subscription that allows unlimited installs takes some of the sting out, since moving to another device costs nothing extra.

How does the process differ on Android TV and Google TV?

Downloader is on Google Play for those platforms, so installation is a normal store install. The permission model is the same idea with different wording: Settings, Apps, Special app access, Install unknown apps, then enable Downloader specifically. One difference matters. The Google Play build of Downloader kept the ability to register itself as a system browser, while the Amazon build had that removed to comply with store policy, so links from other apps behave differently across the two. For installing a player it changes nothing, but it explains why the same app looks slightly different on two devices in the same room.

What about Samsung, LG and Apple TV?

None of them sideload the way a Fire TV does. Samsung Tizen and LG webOS install players from their own stores, and availability there moves without notice, which is why a player present on one television is missing on the next. Apple TV installs from the App Store only. On those platforms the question stops being which downloader code to use and becomes which player your television actually carries, then whether your subscription hands you a login format that player accepts.
